Rush-hour tolls coming to I-90 near Chicago? ...
Feb 29/08
As early as next year, it could cost more to get to
work for the more than 8,000 people who commute from the Rock River
Valley to Cook County. Chicago-area planners are considering raising
tolls during rush hour on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, otherwise
known as Interstate 90, between Elgin and O’Hare International
Airport. No specific toll hikes are set, but planners hypothesize that
there will be a 10 percent to 20 percent increase between the Elgin
and River Road toll plazas and a 50 percent increase at the River Road
plaza....

Planners propose higher tolls at high-congestion times ...
Feb 29/08
How much is breezing through rush-hour traffic worth to
you?... that's the question commuters might face if federal dollars
materialize to establish "congestion pricing" along part of the Jane
Addams Tollway as a pilot project. The concept, introduced in London
in 2003, would require drivers heading into Chicago or to the suburbs
during peak times to pay a premium for a faster trip. Higher tolls for
traveling at rush hour on the Jane Addams, also known as I-90, are
expected to nudge thousands of motorists to opt for cheaper time
slots. "This could mean we have a substantial reduction in congestion
with fewer crashes and more travel time mobility," said Tom Murtha,
senior planner at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, or
CMAP....

Snow Snarls Morning Commute ...
Feb 29/08
The overnight snow was hardly the most severe seen this
winter, but it is still leaving Chicagoans with a rough road for their
morning commute. As CBS 2's Rafael Romo reports, the Stevenson
Expressway was already slowing down at Pulaski Road at the early hour
of 5:30 a.m., and that trend was expected to continue. Numerous
accidents and spinouts had been reported well before sunrise....

Big Illinois Tollway project to add lanes south of state line ...
Feb 28/08
Short-term pain for long-term gain. That's how the
Illinois Tollway characterizes the next two years for Interstate 39-90
south from the Wisconsin state line to the Cherry Valley interchange
at Rockford -- aka the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway. The project will
add a third lane in each direction on the 16-mile segment and rebuild
the notorious interchange with the aim of relieving congestion and the
all-too-frequent backups at the interchange. The plan is to keep two
lanes open in each direction during peak travel times through the
project's scheduled completion in late 2009, but that doesn't mean
there won't be delays....

Crash shuts down eastbound Kennedy Expressway ...
Feb 26/08
One person was hospitalized and several lanes of the
Kennedy Expressway were shut down for nearly an hour Tuesday in a
crash involving five vehicles, including two semi-trailer trucks and a
snowplow. The crash occurred shortly before noon on eastbound
Interstate Highway 90/94 near Ogden Avenue, Illinois State Police
said. One of the trucks jackknifed into the other, rupturing a saddle
tank and spilling diesel over the road. The Chicago Fire Department
called for a hazardous materials response team and cleaned up about 50
gallons of fuel. All lanes were shut down until the spill could be
contained....
